Due to current growth in our service we are currently expanding our team and looking for Puāwaitanga Contract Counsellor’s to join our team. The role offers flexible hours working from home or in a private practice.

What is Puāwaitanga and how does it work?

Puāwaitanga means to blossom, to flourish, to break through and is a phone and web-based brief intervention counselling service to support Kiwis to improve their emotional well-being – their hauora.

  • Referrers will identify someone in need and refer them to Puāwaitanga. 
  • Clients choose which counsellor they would like to work with and schedule their first session using our online portal
  • At the initial appointment, the counsellor listens to the client and helps them identify goals and work out a progress plan 
  • Client's can speak to counsellors about any issues, some of which might be low mood, anxiety, grief, addictions, relationship issues and low self-esteem
  • Over the course of the programme (typically 3-6 sessions) the counsellor and client work together to improve the well-being of the client
  • After their sessions, the counsellor may refer the client on to further services or the client’s clinical team to continue supporting them 

 

To considered for the the role you will have the following skills:

Required skills

  • Completed qualification in a relevant field and full registration with a professional body (e.g., NZAC, NZPB, NZSW or similar)
  • 5+ years’ experience working in Mental Health, Addictions, Counselling or Face to Face therapy
  • Understanding of mental health needs of Maori and Pacifica communities in NZ  
  • Commit to  a minimum of 10 hours per week for client sessions, occurring between 9 am – 9 pm / Monday to Sunday (you choose what days/hours you would like to work)

 

Desirable skills – non essential

  • The ability to speak Te Reo, Samoan, Tongan or Mandarin would be highly advantageous (to a degree of fluency sufficient to hold sessions with clients)
  • Experience in Trauma informed care
  • Experience/Knowledge of Acceptance Commitment Therapy
